St. Georgs - parish church

St. Georg - Pfarrkirche

In a document in 1362 a church of Terento was mentioned. It is believed though that a church had already been there before that, since we know that Bishop Hartmann from Bressanone had already consecrated an altar in 1162. In 1683/84 a new nave was built. From 1848 to 1850 the parish church was extended and remodelled into romanesque revival style.
In 1964 the church was restored and the foundation wall of a nearly square church room from romanesque times was found.
The churches choir and the tower with the lancet belfry windows date back to the late gothic period. In the middle of the 19th Century the nave was rebuilt in romanesque revival style. The barrel vault also dates back to this renovation. It is decorated with ceiling paintings from Christoph Brandstätter. The ceiling paintings were restored in 1896. The churches altars show the transition from Classiscism to Gothic Revival.
Beside the parish church you can find the Holy-Cross Chapel (Heiligkreuz-Kapelle) from late gothic times. The chapel was consecrated in 1520. A polygonal terminating choir and a vault on consoles can be seen in the Chapel.

St. Zeno at Pein

St. Zeno at Pein was built in the 12th or 13th Century. This small church is situated on a lonely hill between two ravines south-west from the parish church. At the door and window area the former romanesque style can be seen. The steeple was only built in 1794/95. Around 1770 a lot of work was done on the church. It is possible that the vault was only built then. The paintings on the inside were created by the baroque painter Johann Mitterwurzer (1745 - 1788). The baroque high altar with a picture of Mary dates back to the second half of the 18th Century. The bell dates back to 1539 and the last restoration took place in 1987/88.

St. Margareth at Margen

In 1309 St. Margareth`s church in Margen was mentioned for the first time. Unfortunately the only remaining reminders of this time are the long nave walls. A small church without vault was probably the basis of St. Margareth`s church. The chapel`s steeple was probably built in the late 14th Century and the long nave was probably vaulted in the early 16th Century. This is a single-naved building and the altar room is located in the tower. The Holy Saint Christopher, whose picture is on the outside wall is believed to have been the protector from storms. The mural of the Fourteen Holy Helpers at the triumphal arch wall is the only remaining church painting. The late gothic winged altar from around 1500 with the sculptures of the three Holy Margareth, Maddlen and Kathrin is well worth a visit. In 1888 the whole altar was restored. The unusual side altar with a painted wing shrine dating back to the start of the 16th Century is also worth a visit. In 1948/49 the church was newly distempered and the furnishings cleaned.

hapels & Mills

Many small chapels on farms give an idea of how devout the population was. Also a visit to the granaries on the farms and the old corn mills along the Winnebach mountain river and along the Terner Bach river is recommended.
Until the opening of the roads, a lot of corn was produced in the village. At the time the village provided nearly all the products necessary for living and it was lively especially along the rivers. There were mashers, mills, forges, water-driven sawmills and weavers.
Part of the Terner Bach river, on the north side of the village centre designated as the mills nature trail in order to preserve the memory of the hard work and work ethic of our ancestors for later generations. As you walk along this path you will also see the pyramids.Viele kleinere

Earth pyramids

The Terner earth pyramids most probably originated as far back as in 1837, when, following an extremely fierce thunderstorm during which 13 people lost their lives, the Terner stream drove off 3 dwellings, 16 mills, 13 churns, one saw and one forge. In all likelihood, this was when the overhang slope was actually formed. Over the following decades, erosion took its toll on principally two different forms of the ensuing detritus compounds: on the material composed of boulders, it worked away to form the classic earth pyramids; on the material that contained no stone masses, it only formed ribs and ridges.
