Rural tradition
The village of Terento is steeped in rural tradition. On account of its favourable location on a sunny terrace, it used to be known as the granary of Val Pusteria. The great importance assumed by cereal crops in the local agricultural production has translated into the creation of many cereal-based dishes. What makes Terento special is that some rural customs have been upheld and are very much alive: some of today's farmers still grow cereal crops and use a water mill to grind their grain into flour. The corn mills of the Mills Valley of Terento have been recently restored. [More information on the mills]
For centuries, Terento's rural life revolved not only around cattle breeding, but also around the growing of cereal crops. With the passing of time, the latter activity has led to the development of an almost unique gastronomic culture which has left its mark on other areas of Val Pusteria as well. This gastronomy now deserves to be made just as noticeable and experienceable as other aspects of Terento's cultural heritage (prehistory, rural culture, indigenous cereal varieties, architectural monuments, hiking paths, …). |
